How to sync your clipboard between Android and Mac

An Android phone and a Mac is the mixed setup nobody builds for. Apple has nothing to offer here, Google's clipboard stays on Android, and the gap between the two is filled with workarounds. Here is the honest state of it, and the one setup that actually feels like a single clipboard.

Apple has nothing for Android

Universal Clipboard, the feature that makes copy and paste flow between a Mac, an iPhone and an iPad, is Apple only. An Android phone is simply not part of it. And even inside Apple's own world it carries just the last item you copied: no history, no search, nothing to go back to.

So on Android and Mac you are starting from zero rather than from a partial solution.

What people try instead

  • KDE Connect. An open source project that pairs an Android phone with a desktop over the local network and can push clipboard content between them. Its macOS build has been described by the project itself as experimental, so check the project's own site for the current state before you depend on it.
  • Emailing or messaging yourself. The universal fallback: a mail to yourself, a note in a shared drive, a message thread used as a scratchpad. Reliable, free, and it turns a one second action into a chore you repeat all day.
  • Cloud note apps. Same idea with better sync. You still have to open an app, paste, wait, switch device, open the app again, copy.

The clipboard-manager way

The alternative is to keep one clipboard history and let both devices share it. That is what Clipnest does, and the Android side is deliberately boring:

  1. Pair once. Scan the QR code on the phone, or paste the link, or type the address. Both devices show the same six digit code and both of you confirm it, so being on the same Wi-Fi is not enough for anyone else to join.
  2. On Android, capture the way you already work: inside the app, through the Share sheet from any app, or by selecting text and choosing Clipnest from the text actions. No accessibility service, no background service running behind your back.
  3. It appears in the panel on your Mac. Press Control Option V, type a couple of letters, hit return and it pastes into the app you were just in.

Images sync as well as text. Pin something on the phone and it is pinned on the Mac. Delete something, or let Auto-delete history age it out, and it disappears from every paired device. A device that was offline catches up when it reconnects. Both devices need to be on the same network today; sync across the internet comes later.

Questions

Does Universal Clipboard work with Android?

No. It is Apple only, so an Android phone is not part of it at all, and even between Apple devices it carries just the last item you copied.

What about KDE Connect on a Mac?

It pairs an Android phone with a desktop over the local network and is open source. Its macOS build has been described by the project as experimental, so check the project's own site for the current state before depending on it.

Does Clipnest need an accessibility service on Android?

No. It captures in the app, from the Share sheet of any app, and from the select text then Clipnest action. There is no accessibility service and no background service watching your clipboard.

Do the clips go through a cloud service?

No. Paired devices exchange clips directly over your local network, encrypted end to end, with no account and no server. Sync across the internet comes later as an optional extra.
