How to copy on your phone and paste on your PC
You copy something on your phone and want it on your PC. It sounds simple. Often it is not. This guide shows how to copy on your phone and paste on your PC, and back again, for iPhone and Android, with a Windows PC or a Mac.
Copy on your phone, paste on your PC: the quick answer
First, one word. The clipboard is the invisible place where your phone or computer keeps what you just copied, until you paste it.
Android to Windows: use Phone Link if your phone is on Microsoft's list, otherwise SwiftKey Cloud Clipboard.
iPhone to Windows: nothing is built in. Use a clipboard manager, or the old tricks like emailing yourself.
iPhone to Mac: Universal Clipboard is built in. Copy on one, paste on the other.
Android phone to Windows PC
Microsoft gives you two free options.
Phone Link
Phone Link is the Windows app that connects to your Android phone.
- Set up Phone Link on your PC with the Link to Windows app on your phone.
- On the PC, open Phone Link and go to Settings, then Features, then Cross-device copy and paste.
- Turn it on. Copy on the phone, paste on the PC.
The limits, per Microsoft: only text and images, and images above 1 MB are resized. Each new copy replaces the last one, so there is no history. It can use mobile data unless you turn that off.
The catch is the phone. Microsoft lists Surface Duo, Samsung phones on One UI 2.1 or later, and selected HONOR, OPPO, ASUS, vivo and Xiaomi models. Other phones are not listed.
SwiftKey Cloud Clipboard
SwiftKey is Microsoft's free keyboard for Android.
- On the phone, open SwiftKey, then Rich input, then Clipboard, and turn on the sync switch.
- On the PC, open Settings, then System, then Clipboard. Turn on Clipboard history and Sync across devices.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account on both.
The limits: it needs a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com or Hotmail.com), not a work account. Microsoft's page describes it for text. It keeps only your last copied clip, and that clip is available for an hour.
iPhone to Windows PC
Here is the honest answer: there is nothing built in from Apple or Microsoft. Apple's Universal Clipboard only works between Apple devices. Phone Link's copy and paste list does not include iPhone. SwiftKey says it cannot sync clips to iOS.
That may change. In August 2026, Dataconomy and PCWorld reported that Apple plans iPhone to Windows clipboard sync, but not before fall 2027.
Until then, people use tricks:
- Email the text to yourself.
- Paste it into a notes app you can open on the PC.
- Send it to yourself in a messaging app you have on both.
- Keep a shared document open on both devices.
They work, but they are tiring. You leave what you were doing, every time. Nothing is organised, so last week's link is buried in a chat. And what you copied sits on someone's server.
iPhone or iPad to Mac
This pair is easy. Apple's Universal Clipboard is built in. Copy on your iPhone or iPad, then paste on your Mac. It carries text, images, photos and videos. It needs:
- The same Apple Account on each device.
- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on.
- Handoff turned on (it is on by default).
- The devices near each other.
It keeps only the last thing you copied. Apple says it "remains there briefly, or until you replace it by copying something else on either device."
From the PC back to the phone
Want to copy on your laptop and paste on your phone? The same options run both ways.
- Phone Link: Microsoft says a copy on either device replaces the clipboard on both.
- SwiftKey Cloud Clipboard: Microsoft describes it as syncing between SwiftKey on Android and Windows.
- Universal Clipboard: both directions between your Apple devices.
iPhone and Windows still have no built-in way, in either direction.
One way that covers every phone and every computer
Each option above covers some pairs and not others. The clipboard-manager way is one app on all your devices: Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android. That is what Clipnest does.
- Pair once. Open Clipnest on the new device. Scan the code the other device shows, or on a PC type the other device's address. Then type the six digits it shows. A stranger on the same Wi-Fi cannot join without that code.
- Copy. On a PC or Mac, Clipnest saves what you copy by itself. On a phone, you tap once to add what you copied, or share anything into Clipnest from any app. Phones do not let apps read the clipboard in the background, so that one tap is needed.
- Paste. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+V, type to search, and press Enter to paste.
Your devices talk directly over your Wi-Fi. Nothing you copy goes through our servers, and there is no account. You get a searchable history on every device, not just the last item, with photos and files too. Card numbers and login codes are recognised and hidden, and still paste when you need them.
Where it stands today: Windows is on the Microsoft Store now. Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android are coming soon. Both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi for now; syncing from anywhere is on the way.
Clipnest is free for your latest 20 clips and files up to 10 MB, on all your devices. Pro is paid once per platform, inside the app: $14.99 for iPhone, iPad and Mac together, $9.99 for Windows, $9.99 for Android. No subscription.

Questions
Can you copy on an iPhone and paste on Windows?
Not with anything built in. Universal Clipboard only works between Apple devices, and Phone Link's copy and paste only lists certain Android phones. Reports in August 2026 said Apple plans it, but not before fall 2027. Until then, use a workaround or a clipboard manager that runs on both.
How do I copy and paste from my phone to my computer?
It depends on the pair. Android to Windows: Phone Link or SwiftKey Cloud Clipboard. iPhone to Mac: Universal Clipboard. iPhone to Windows: nothing built in, so message yourself or use a clipboard manager on both.
Where is the clipboard on my phone?
iPhone has no clipboard screen: you just touch and hold in a text box and tap Paste. On Android, Gboard has a Clipboard button at the top of the keyboard, and many other Android keyboards show a similar button on their toolbar. On a Windows PC, press Windows key + V to see your clipboard history.
Why did the thing I copied disappear?
Most clipboards keep only the last thing you copied, so a new copy replaces it. Some also expire: SwiftKey keeps a clip for an hour, Universal Clipboard keeps it briefly, and Windows clears its clipboard history when you restart, except pinned items.
Do I need the same Wi-Fi?
Not always. Phone Link can use mobile data unless you turn that off. Universal Clipboard needs Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on and the devices near each other. Clipnest needs both devices on the same Wi-Fi today, because they talk to each other directly; syncing from anywhere is on the way.
