Universal Clipboard for Windows and Android: what exists, and what actually works

"Universal Clipboard" is Apple's name for copying on one Apple device and pasting on another, but plenty of people search for a Universal Clipboard for Windows and Android too. Apple does not make one, and Microsoft's options each cover part of the gap. Here is where each one stops, and what gives you the same thing everywhere.

What Universal Clipboard is, and where it stops

You copy text, images, photos or videos on a Mac, iPhone or iPad and paste them on another. It works when:

  • every device is signed in with the same Apple Account;
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on;
  • Handoff is turned on (it is by default);
  • the devices are near each other.

It carries one item. In Apple's words, what you copy "remains there briefly, or until you replace it by copying something else on either device." There is no history and no search. And it is Apple only: there is no Universal Clipboard client for Windows and none for Android.

Is there a Universal Clipboard for Windows?

Not from Apple. Microsoft has two features that come closest, and neither one is a full answer.

Windows clipboard history sync

Press Win+V for your clipboard history. Turn on sync and it follows you to other Windows PCs on the same Microsoft account or work account. The limits: 25 entries, 4 MB per item, and the history "gets cleared each time you restart your PC, except for the items you've pinned." It is Windows to Windows only.

Phone Link cross-device copy and paste

Phone Link connects an Android phone to a Windows PC, and on supported phones you can copy on one and paste on the other. Microsoft says "it is only possible to copy text and images between your devices currently", that "images above 1MB in size will be resized", and that every time you copy something, "what you copy will replace the clipboard content on both of your devices." No history.

The supported list is narrow: Surface Duo, Samsung phones on One UI 2.1 or above, and selected HONOR, OPPO, ASUS, vivo and Xiaomi models. Other Android phones are not listed, and neither is the iPhone.

And the iPhone?

Nothing from Microsoft copies an iPhone clipboard to Windows today. In August 2026, Dataconomy and PCWorld reported that Apple intends to support iPhone to Windows clipboard sync, but not before fall 2027.

Is there a Universal Clipboard for Android?

Not from Apple, so there is no built-in way to copy on Android and paste on a Mac or an iPhone. What Android does have points at Windows:

  • Phone Link, if your phone is on Microsoft's list above. Text and images, last item only.
  • SwiftKey Cloud Clipboard. If you type with Microsoft SwiftKey on Android, it can sync what you copy to a Windows PC. It needs a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com or Hotmail.com, not a work account), it "will only ever retain your last copied clip", and that clip is "available for an hour." Microsoft says it does not sync to iOS, Mac or Linux.
Last checked October 2026. Everything above comes from each vendor's own published documentation: Apple's Universal Clipboard guide and Continuity requirements; Microsoft's Clipboard in Windows, Phone Link cross-device copy and paste, Phone Link requirements and setup and SwiftKey Cloud Clipboard. Apple's plans: Dataconomy and PCWorld. Vendor features change; check their pages before you rely on them.

What "universal" should mean

People searching for a universal clipboard usually want six things:

  • Every platform you own. Universal Clipboard stops at Apple. Windows sync stops at Windows. Phone Link and SwiftKey join Android to Windows and nothing else.
  • A history, not just the last item. Universal Clipboard, Phone Link and SwiftKey each hold one item. Windows keeps 25, and a restart clears everything you did not pin.
  • Photos and files. Universal Clipboard carries photos and videos. Phone Link resizes images over 1 MB. Windows caps each item at 4 MB.
  • Search. None of the Apple or Microsoft pages above document searching what you copied.
  • No account. Every built-in option needs one: an Apple Account, or a Microsoft account for Windows sync, Phone Link and SwiftKey.
  • Private. A clipboard holds passwords, codes and addresses. None of the Apple or Microsoft pages above document hiding them.

A universal clipboard you can install today

The other way is the clipboard-manager way: one app on every device, sharing one history. That is Clipnest.

  1. Open Clipnest on the new device and scan the code the other device shows (a PC types the other device's address instead).
  2. Type the six digits it shows. A stranger on the same Wi-Fi cannot join without that code.
  3. From then on your devices talk to each other directly over your Wi-Fi. Nothing you copy goes through our servers, and there is no account to make. A device that was off catches up when it is back.

Every paired device gets the whole history, with search: Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows or ⌘⇧V on Mac, type, press Enter. Text, links, photos and files sync, and folders, pins and deletes follow you. Card numbers, login codes and secret keys are recognised and hidden behind a hint like CARD: 4111••••. Your history is encrypted on every device, and sync is encrypted end to end between your devices.

On Mac and Windows, Clipnest saves everything you copy automatically. On iPhone and Android the system does not allow silent background clipboard watching, so you add what you copied with one tap, or share anything into Clipnest from any app's share sheet.

Two honest limits. Windows is on the Microsoft Store now; Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android are coming soon. And today both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi; syncing from anywhere is on the way. It is free for your latest 20 clips on all your devices, and Pro is paid once per platform.

Questions

Does Universal Clipboard work on Windows?

No. It is Apple only. Windows has its own clipboard history sync, but it only syncs between Windows PCs on the same Microsoft or work account.

Does Universal Clipboard work on Android?

No. Apple makes no Android client. Microsoft's Phone Link and SwiftKey Cloud Clipboard reach Windows, one item at a time.

Is there an online universal clipboard?

There are browser clipboards: websites where you paste text, usually under a shared room code, and open the same page on another device. You paste into them by hand, and the text sits on someone else's server. Fine for a link, not for a password.

Can I get Universal Clipboard between iPhone and Windows?

Not from Apple or Microsoft today. Phone Link's cross-device copy and paste lists Android phones only. In August 2026, Dataconomy and PCWorld reported that Apple intends to support iPhone to Windows clipboard sync, but not before fall 2027. The iPhone and Windows guide goes further.

What is the best Universal Clipboard alternative for mixed devices?

One that runs on every platform you own and keeps a history, not just the last item. Clipnest is built for that: paired devices share one searchable history, photos and files included, with no account. Windows is on the Microsoft Store now; Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android are coming soon.
