Universal Clipboard not working? Every fix, in the order to try them
You copied on your iPhone, pressed Command-V on your Mac, and got whatever was there before. When Universal Clipboard is not working between a Mac, iPhone or iPad, the cause is almost always one of a few settings. Here are Apple's requirements, then every fix in order, quickest first.
First, the four things Universal Clipboard needs
Apple's Universal Clipboard page lists these conditions. All of them must be true on every device involved:
- The same Apple Account signed in on each device.
- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on, on each device.
- Handoff turned on. Apple notes it is on by default, but it can be switched off.
- The devices near each other.
Your devices also need to be new enough. Apple's system requirements are iOS 10 or later on iPhone (iPhone 5 or later), any version of iPadOS, and macOS Sierra 10.12 or later on the Mac. Macs introduced in 2012 or later qualify, except the Mac Pro, which needs the 2013 model or later. Copying whole files from one Mac to another needs macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later on both.
Anything else on this page that goes beyond Apple's text is marked as a common check, not from Apple's page.
Fixes, in order
-
Confirm the same Apple Account on every device
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your name at the top. On a Mac, open System Settings and click your name at the top of the sidebar. The email shown must match on every device; a family member's account or an old work account is a common mix-up.
-
Turn Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off and on, on both devices
Universal Clipboard needs both radios on. Turning them off and on again is a quick way to reset a connection that has stopped responding (a common check, not from Apple's page).
-
Confirm Handoff is on
iPhone and iPad: Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity (called AirPlay & Handoff on older versions), then turn on Handoff. Mac on macOS Ventura or later: System Settings > General > AirDrop & Continuity (or AirDrop & Handoff), then turn on "Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices". On older macOS, it is in System Preferences > General.
-
Copy again, then paste within a few seconds
Apple says copied content "remains there briefly". It does not give a time, so if you copied a while ago, it may simply have expired. Copy again and paste straight away (a common check, not from Apple's page).
-
Install updates
This is Apple's first troubleshooting step. Update the Mac in System Settings > General > Software Update, and the iPhone or iPad in Settings > General > Software Update.
-
Restart both devices
Apple's second step. Restart both, not just the one that seems broken, then try a short piece of text first.
-
Sign out of the Apple Account and back in
If the account matches but nothing works, signing out and back in on one device often resets Handoff. It is a bigger step than the others, so try it last (a common check, not from Apple's page).
-
Bring the devices closer
Apple asks for the devices to be near each other. Put the phone next to the Mac and try again before you conclude it is broken.
Things that look like a Universal Clipboard failure but are not
- You copied something else. Apple says the content stays until you copy something else on either device. Copying on the Mac after the iPhone replaces it on both.
- It was a large file or video. Apple lists photos and videos among what it carries, but a big item takes longer to arrive than a line of text. Give it a moment (a common check, not from Apple's page).
- You expected a history. There is none. Universal Clipboard only ever holds the last item, so something you copied ten minutes ago and then replaced cannot be pasted.
- You are pasting on a Windows PC or an Android phone. Universal Clipboard has never supported either. If that is your situation, no fix above will help; read on.
If one of your devices is Windows or Android
Universal Clipboard is Apple only. Apple's requirements list Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple Vision Pro, and nothing else. That may change: in August 2026, Dataconomy and PCWorld reported that Apple intends to support iPhone to Windows clipboard sync, but not before fall 2027.
Until then, the clipboard-manager way is to run one clipboard history on every device instead of relying on the operating system. That is what Clipnest does:
- Pairing. Open Clipnest on the new device and scan the code the other device shows (a PC types the other device's address instead), then type the six digits it shows. A stranger on the same Wi-Fi cannot join without that code.
- Direct sync. Your devices talk to each other directly over your own Wi-Fi. Nothing you copy goes through our servers, and there is no account to make.
- A history you can search. Copying something new no longer loses the last thing. Press Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows or ⌘⇧V on Mac, type to search, and paste.
- Photos and files too, not only text and links.
- Secrets stay hidden. Card numbers, login codes and secret keys are recognised and shown only as a hint, and they still paste when you need them.
Be clear on two limits. Windows is on the Microsoft Store now; Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android are coming soon. And today both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi; syncing from anywhere is on the way. The Universal Clipboard for Windows and Android guide covers the other options too.

Questions
Why does Universal Clipboard stop working between my Mac and iPhone?
Usually because one of Apple's conditions is no longer true: different Apple Accounts, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi off on one device, Handoff off, or the devices not near each other. Apple's own fixes are to install updates, restart both devices, and check that setup again.
How long does Universal Clipboard keep what I copied?
Apple says it remains briefly, or until you replace it by copying something else on either device. There is no exact time, so paste soon after you copy.
Does Universal Clipboard have a history?
No. It holds one item, the last thing you copied. Copy something else on any of your devices and the previous item is gone. A clipboard manager is the way to keep a history.
Does Universal Clipboard work with Windows or Android?
No. Apple's requirements list Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple Vision Pro. There is no Windows or Android version, so no setting will make it reach those devices.
Do my Mac and iPhone need to be on the same Wi-Fi for Universal Clipboard?
Apple's page does not say same network. It asks for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be on, the same Apple Account on each device, Handoff on, and the devices near each other.
Why is Universal Clipboard not working between my Mac and iPad?
The checks are the same as for an iPhone: same Apple Account, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on, Handoff on in Settings > General, and the iPad near the Mac. Then install updates and restart both. Apple supports iPad (4th generation) or later, every iPad Air and iPad Pro, and iPad mini 2 or later.
